A district of over 200 Sino-Portuguese shophouses and colonial mansions built during the island's 19th-century tin-mining boom, when Chinese immigrant labour met Portuguese-influenced European trader architecture. Thalang Road is the main commercial spine, Soi Romanee is the most photographed street, and the Baba Museum (in a former 1907 Standard Chartered Bank building) covers the local Baba Peranakan history.
